This week on Classicalis among our other female composers keep an ear out for Dora Pejačević.  She is considered by some to be one of the two most important Croatian composers; it is always going to be controversial to bestow the title of “national best composer” on anyone, of course, because it is so subjective.  At any rate her music is absolutely brilliant – I at least was utterly convinced!

We also have the British Composer Jeremiah Clarke’s Trumpet Voluntary/Prince of Denmark’s March, a piece which most people will instantly recognise, even if they did not know the name of the composer. The same is true of Edvard Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King”. (Yet another moment of “Oh, so that’s what it’s called!” – or at least it was such a moment for me!)  Other composers to listen out for are Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Borodin, and Giacomo Puccini, the last sung by the one and only Luciano Pavarotti!

We also have a performance of Gabriel’s Oboe by the Italian composer Ennio Morricone, who sadly passed away earlier this month, 6th July 2020.
